An ink cartridge is an essential part of printer which contains ink and is a usually removable part that can be easily re-filled for reuse or can replaced completely by a new cartridge. Few advanced cartridges also have print head. Ink cartridges may contain different coloured inks within the ink reservoirs. There are further different levels in advancement with higher range of cartridges that contain electronic tags and chips which communicate with printers.

Usually, printers require two cartridges for functioning properly. First one will have black ink which is required for standard printing and the second one will have three ink reservoirs containing three primary colours, i.e. red, yellow and blue). Utilization of three basic colours will allow printing of any colour.

Industrial sized printers require significantly large reservoir and the primary colours which may be in the cartridge that enables greater speed of printing and high definition for colours. Few manufacturers of printers sell their own specific cartridges.

Manufacturer’s cartridges can be expensive and thus many vendors produce compatible substitutes which are available as cheaper alternatives. Such substitutes may contain more or less ink levels, printing quality will totally depend on the individual manufacturer and this it can be risky to buy compatible substitutes. Read More
